Monday-Heath-World Prematurity Day 17th November!

Today on the show we spoke to Julie Gibson from the Newborn Groote Schuur Trust.World Prematurity Day is observed on 17 November each year to raise awareness of preterm birth and the concerns of preterm babies and their families worldwide.Approximately 15 million babies are born preterm each year, accounting for about one in 10 of all babies born worldwide.
Julie mentioned that in Goote Schuur hospital they will be celebrating the day is style, they urge people in the community on that day to wear something purple in support of the World Premetutiry Day. They will welcome anyone in the community thats interested in knitting caps for babies that are born premature. If you find your self in around Salt River or Observaty please make your way to the Groote Schuur hospital, she added that they will open their doors at 07h00 till 2pm.

Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
