Arts, Culture and Environment - Siv Ngesi stars in "Panic"

On Sakhisizwe today, we were joined by renowned actor and comedian - Sivuyile “Siv” Ngesi to talk about his one man show Panic that opened on Tuesday at the Artscape Theatre. Siv plays Thando Molepo - a young man in his late twenties, facing and attempting to deal with a number of internal, domestic, relational and macro conflicts, all of them related in some way, or having some bearing on each other. Panic is written by Mike van Graan and directed by Heinrich Reisenhofer. It was commissioned by Siv, who co-presents it with Artscape. Fireball presents Bomba Estéreo & Arts Update

Jargon Music to be part of "The Ohayv Ahbır Experıence" at Zula tomorrow night

We were talking about " The Ohayv Ahbır Experıence" taking place at Zula Sound Bar tomorrow night featuring Zanzolo, Jargon Music and Emi the 5th letter on decks. The show is part of Umzabalazo tour 2013. Umzabalazo tour is a series of shows where Ohay v Ahbir brings all musical skills from soul, emceeing and his piano skills to six cities including Port Elizabeth, Pretoria, Johanne sburg, Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Durban. Labour - POPCRU threatens national strike

On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Mncedisi Mbolekwa - Provincial secretary of POPCRU in the Western Cape about the outcome of the march they embarked on yesterday. POPCRU Members employed by the South African Police Service under the Public Service Act were marching over the safety and security sectoral bargaining council agreement signed in 2011, which had apparently not yet been implemented. POPCRU is demanding that SAPS implements the agreement signed which states that Public Service Act employees would be translated into the SAPS Act to ensure that they are eligible for the vast benefits currently enjoyed by their colleagues in uniform. Mncedisi said that POPCRU will convene a national march 14 days from the day of the first round of marches in the event that SAPS doesn’t deliver on their demands. Gender - Alternation of Sex Description and Sex Status Act needs "proper implementation strategy"

In today's show, we heard from Manny de Freitas – From the Democratic Alliance speaking to us about the Alternation of Sex Description and Sex Status Act. The Alteration of Sex Description and Sex Status Act No. 49 of 2003 is a South African Act of Parliament which allows a person to change, under certain conditions, their sex recorded in the population registry. Johns Hopkins Health and Education in SA launches ZAZI campaign

We were joined by Bronwyn Pearce - Deputy Director of Johns Hopkins Health and Education in South Africa  to tell us more about the ZAZI campaign. The campaign encourages women and girls to draw on their inner strength, power, and self-confidence to know themselves and what they stand for in order to guide their decisions about their future. A new campaign calling on South African women and girls to Zazi (Know yourself) was recently launched under the leadership of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) Women’s Sector, with support from the USAID/JHU HIV Communication programme and PEPFAR in partnership with the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, the Department of Health and the Department of Social Development. The Bonteheuwel Men in Action under the banner of the Bonteheuwel Churches in Action comprises of men from the different fellowships that reaches out to their surrounding communities. The group engages in various community projects such as street lighting, illegal dumping cleaning, and refurbishing schools. Human Rights - Wordworks is transforming lives through literacy

Shelley O'Carroll - Director and Early Literacy Programme Coordinator of Wordworks joined us on the line to talk about the organisation and their home-school partnership programme. Wordworks aims to support and improve the literacy and language development of children from disadvantaged communities through targeted early intervention and the delivery of proven programmes and resources. Sexual Offences Act challenged

Sanja Bornman - An attorney for the Women’s Legal Centre spoke to us about the landmark Constitutional Court case against the criminalisation of consenting sexual activity between adolescents. In light of Child Protection Week that’s commemorated this week, the Constitutional Court will hear the declaration of invalidity by the Teddy Bear Clinic and Resources Aimed at the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (RAPCAN), represented by the Centre for Child Law regarding their challenge against the offending provisions of the Sexual Offences Act. This emerged after consensual sexual activities, including kissing, between children between the ages of 12 and 16 became a criminal offence when the Sexual Offences Act came into force in 2007.

Health - MTC in partnership with Bush Radio focuses on Teenage pregnancy

On Sakhisizwe today, we were broadcasting live from the Mowbray Maternity Hospital as part of the MTC project in partnership with Bush Radio. We spoke to Muriel Johnstone and Zubeida Bassadien - Both are Social Workers and Sister Carol Hill - A professional nurse at the hospital’s antenatal clinic about risky sexual behaviour and the consequences of teenage pregnancy. Zubeida Bassadien, Sister Carol Hill, Muriel Johnstone & Busi Mtabane     Bush Radio will host these special broadcasts every last Monday of the month. On Monday June 24 th , 20 13 we will be broadcasting live from the Groote Schuur Hospital.

On Sakhisizwe today, we heard from Siviwe Mbinda – Founder of the Happyfeet Youth Project. Siviwe started the project in an effort to provide a safe after school environment for the children of KwaLanga. The program empowers the children through gumboots and traditional dance to be confident and disciplined in achieving their goals both on and off the stage. Siviwe explained more. The funding Happy Feet receives goes towards uniforms, traditional instruments, a feeding scheme, school fee and material support, and Happy Feet outings and functions. Coaching Circles to help organisations develop and retain top talent

Janine Everson - Academic director at the Centre for Coaching at UCT’s Graduate School of Business joined us on the line to talk about how Coaching Circles can help organisations develop and retain top talent. According to research from the Centre it appears that Coaching Circles a relatively new training technique can impart valuable business and management skills more cost effectively than conventional training programmes. It involves small groups of people, who share a project or an activity, and meet regularly to work on problems in a supportive environment. But unlike action learning, which has problem solving as its prime goal, Coaching Circles have a triple focus on solving problems, empowering individual members of the team, and teaching and embedding coaching skills in the organisation during the process. Gender - Joburg Mardi Gras: a new generation of Pride to be launched

Samantha Durkin – Former Joburg Gay Pride Festival Company Board Member joined us on the line.   The board of Joburg Gay Pride Festival Company voted to end the Section 21 Company that has produced Joburg Pride over the past seven years. The Company was voluntarily wound up by unanimous resolution at a board meeting in March this year. Samantha explained more on what influenced the board’s decision. She is currently organising a new event for the LGBTI community, the Joburg Mardi Gras. The Joburg Mardi Gras will be a festival of cultural and social entertainment events, offering an unconditional platform for community expression. GALA launches Hear Us Out!

On the International Day against Homophobia which was last week Friday , GALA launched a website developed specifically for African lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) youth and their allies. Labelled a 'resource and creative space for African LGBTI Youth’, Hear Us Out! is a unique online platform on which LGBTI youth can connect with and support other young people from across the continent. The Department of Social Development to launch 2013 National Child Protection Week

Cape Town Alcohol and Drug Action Committee in Mitchell’s Plain promotes drug free lifestyle for the youth

Jonathan Jonkers - Chairman of the Cape Town Alcohol and Drug Action Committee for Mitchell’s Plain was Instudio to tell us more about how they promote a drug free lifestyle for the youth. Mitchell’s Plain is one of eight sub committees of the Cape Town Alcohol and Drug Action Committee that was established by the City in accordance with the National Drug Master Plan. The committee includes people from all sectors involved in substance abuse and related problems such as justice, police, probation and correctional services, school, health, social development and community structure officials. The national plan expects sub-committees to develop and maintain integrated drug policies in collaboration with all stakeholders in order to prevent drug related crime and ensure quality of life for residents at community level. Health - Depression and Related Disorders Support Group to host a talk on sleep disorders

On the show today, we spoke to Cathleen Matthews - Leader of the Strandfontein Depression and Related Disorders Support Group. We were talking about the talk on sleep disorders and insomnia that they hosting tonight.   The Strandfontein Depression and Related Disorders Support Group affiliated to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is hosting Dr Adelbert Scholtz a counselling psychologist who will present a talk on sleep disorders and insomnia. He will explain why people need sleep, the importance of regular sleeping patterns for physical and mental health, and ways to combat insomnia. You can live a normal life with bipolar disorder

We also heard from Jay Barnes – Convener of the Western Cape Bipolar Support Association. We were focusing on Bipolar disorder and bipolar Awareness day which is on the 26 th of May. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is a mood disorder characterised by extreme shifts in mood, energy and functioning. This is much less common than Major Depressive Disorder and Dysthymia, and only 2% of the population is affected over a lifetime. Males and females are affected equally. According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, over 470 000 South Africans are living with bipolar disorder . Bipolar disorder is also the fifth leading cause of disability worldwide. WHO says "Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship"

Arts, Culture & Environment - 22nd of May is International Biodiversity Day

On the show today, we spoke to Carol Pool – From the South African National Biodiversity Institute. On Wednesday the 22 nd of May is International Biodiversity Day and as part of the Kirstenbosch Centenary celebrations, entry to Kirstenbosch and Biodiversity Day activities on this day will be free . Labour - SAIF to host inaugural Southern Africa Fundraising Awards

Gender - Perinatal Mental Health Project empowers mothers of Hanover Park

On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Liesl Hermanus - Counsellor for the Perinatal Mental Health Project in Hanover Park . We were talking about challenges faced by teenage mothers. PMHP is an independent initiative based at the University of Cape Town. It provides a counselling service in 4 public obstetric facilities in Cape Town as one out of three women living in poverty in South Africa will suffer from a mental health problem related to her pregnancy.
