Dene and Lauren In today's show, we were joined by Dene Benjamin and Lauren Fuller - 4 th year UCT Occupational Therapy students. They were speaking to us about the support employment programme that they currently running at Vanguard Community Health Centre. The programme aims to bridge the gap between people with disability and the open labour market after both students noted many issues such as the realisation of people with disability’s rights and the opportunities available to persons with disability in the workplace whilst working at the Centre that serves the areas of Bonteheuwel and Langa in Cape Town . We also heard from Mduduzi Manana – Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training to tell us more about the launch of “ON THE JOB ” Built Environment Training Programme which is a partnership between the Passenger Agency of South Africa and the Department of Higher Education and Training. The initiative offers “on the job” training to students in the built environment sector and would form part of PRASA’s preparations for the acquisition of the new rolling stock of trains over the next 20 years. 40 students between the ages of 21-35 from previously disadvantaged communities who have made it through their academic training programs have been selected for the programme by PRASA and DHET together with the post-school learning institutions. They will be employed for a period of three months, during which they would receive supervision from experienced professionals in the built environment with identified areas of training for the first phase including B-Tech Architecture, B-Tech Con

We heard from Professor Jolanda Roux - Researcher at the University of South Africa ’s Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute to tell us more about the recent NSTF- BHP Billiton Award that she received for her outstanding contribution to Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation. Professor Roux’s research interests focus strongly on fungi and bacteria resulting in disease and death of woody hosts. Most of her research has been focused on the diseases of the commercial plantation forestry species in South Africa and other African countries . The NSTF- BHP Billiton Awards is the flagship project of the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) that encourages and rewards excellence in scientific research, technological innovation, education, capacity building and science communication in South Africa . The awards provide an opportunity for recognition on a national level for all practicing scientists, engineers and technologists across the system of innovation.

He was speaking to us whether the latest crime statistics regarding children as victims of crimes   is a true reflection or not. According to the latest annual SAPS crime statistics for the period of April 2011 to March 2012, 50 688 children were victims of crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, common assault to assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm. A total of 793 children were murdered, 758 survived a murder attempt, 25 862 were sexually attacked, 12 645 were assaulted and 10 630 were grievously assaulted. In today's show, we spoke to Francois Venter - Director of Jawitz Properties. We were talking about home owners rights regarding property evaluations. This follows after the City of Cape Town council approved the production of a 2012 General Valuation Roll. The GV2012 project will determine the municipal values of homes and effectively the property rates that should be paid, based on the values but according to Property experts, these valuations may not be entirely accurate. The union is said to be under attack from bosses for organising farm workers through their Speak out Campaign. The Speak-Out Campaign aims to bring an end to the oppression and exploitation of farm workers and farm dwellers by coming together to build solidarity, strength and hope amongst the rural working class. Nikki & Greg On Sakhisizwe today, we were joined by Nikki Soboil - Executive director of SACTWU’s Worker Health Program and trainer - Greg Hoedemaker telling us more about the roll out of medical male circumcision for its members as of next month in the province. SACTWU’s Worker Health Program funded by PEPFAR launched its own roll out of surgical Medical Male Circumcision services within Kwa Zulu Natal at the end of last year in support of the National Department of Health’s comprehensive HIV prevention package and COSATU’s HIV/Aids prevention program. The GF Jooste Hospital Closure Coalition said they fail to understand the Provincial Department of Health’s reasons for the shutdown of  GF Jooste Hospital whilst they welcome the plan to build a new hospital that will include paediatric and obstetric services, they are also deeply concerned about the potentially catastrophic impact the closure will have in the community as well as on all health facilities throughout Metro West.

We also heard from Priscilla Themba – Chairperson of the Select Committee on Labour and Public Enterprise. She was speaking to us about the outcome of the Committee's unannounced oversight visit to Sheltered Employment Factories in the Western Cape yesterday. This followed after the Eastern Cape visit at the beginning of the year. The Committee discovered that conditions in the Eastern Cape were unsatisfactory, so they decided to visit other factories in the Western Cape in order to compare the two provinces.
