Puppetry South Africa to showcase new talent at Ubizo Arts Festival & Arts Update

We heard from Justin Christian – From Puppetry South Africa formerly known as UNIMA South Africa. Puppetry South Africa will run puppetry workshops for 4 days a week over the course of 2 weeks and will be working with 10 children per school the between the 17 th of September and 3 rd of October 2012. 27 September - Labour - Support Employment Programme empowers people with disability

Dene and Lauren In today's show, we were joined by Dene Benjamin and Lauren Fuller - 4 th year UCT Occupational Therapy students. They were speaking to us about the support employment programme that they currently running at Vanguard Community Health Centre. The programme aims to bridge the gap between people with disability and the open labour market after both students noted many issues such as the realisation of people with disability’s rights and the opportunities available to persons with disability in the workplace whilst working at the Centre that serves the areas of Bonteheuwel and Langa in Cape Town . Higher Education and Training Department and PRASA launches “ON THE JOB” Initiative

We also heard from Mduduzi Manana – Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training to tell us more about the launch of “ON THE JOB ” Built Environment Training Programme which is a partnership between the Passenger Agency of South Africa and the Department of Higher Education and Training. The initiative offers “on the job” training to students in the built environment sector and would form part of PRASA’s preparations for the acquisition of the new rolling stock of trains over the next 20 years. 40 students between the ages of 21-35 from previously disadvantaged communities who have made it through their academic training programs have been selected for the programme by PRASA and DHET together with the post-school learning institutions. They will be employed for a period of three months, during which they would receive supervision from experienced professionals in the built environment with identified areas of training for the first phase including B-Tech Architecture, B-Tech Con

Professor Jolanda Roux receives NSTF-BHP Billiton Award

We heard from Professor Jolanda Roux - Researcher at the University of South Africa ’s Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute to tell us more about the recent NSTF- BHP Billiton Award that she received for her outstanding contribution to Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation. Professor Roux’s research interests focus strongly on fungi and bacteria resulting in disease and death of woody hosts. Most of her research has been focused on the diseases of the commercial plantation forestry species in South Africa and other African countries . The NSTF- BHP Billiton Awards is the flagship project of the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) that encourages and rewards excellence in scientific research, technological innovation, education, capacity building and science communication in South Africa . The awards provide an opportunity for recognition on a national level for all practicing scientists, engineers and technologists across the system of innovation.

Molo Songololo urges parents to protect children

We closed off with an interview with Patrick Solomons - Director of Molo Songololo. He was speaking to us whether the latest crime statistics regarding children as victims of crimes   is a true reflection or not. According to the latest annual SAPS crime statistics for the period of April 2011 to March 2012, 50 688 children were victims of crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, common assault to assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm. A total of 793 children were murdered, 758 survived a murder attempt, 25 862 were sexually attacked, 12 645 were assaulted and 10 630 were grievously assaulted. 25 September - Human Rights - Council approves 2012 General Valuation Roll

In today's show, we spoke to Francois Venter - Director of Jawitz Properties. We were talking about home owners rights regarding property evaluations. This follows after the City of Cape Town council approved the production of a 2012 General Valuation Roll. The GV2012 project will determine the municipal values of homes and effectively the property rates that should be paid, based on the values but according to Property experts, these valuations may not be entirely accurate. Mr Venter advises that personal valuations be done independently to ascertain an accurate valuation when homeowners are able to contest their given valuations and property rates in March and April 2013. UWC is hosting the Annual Ashley Kriel Youth Memorial Lecture

Miss Nthabi is making a comeback

Miss Nthabi & Busi Hip Hop artist Nthabi Mofokeng, who is in Cape Town for pleasure made a stopover at Bush Radio. Nthabi shared with us how she has managed to stay on top on this male dominated genre. Legal Centre in Defence of the Rural Poor to help CSAAWU

We also heard from Zanna Bliss - Co-founder of the Legal Centre in Defence of the Rural Poor. We were talking about their call to support the Commercial, Stevedoring, Agricultural and Allied Workers Union or CSAAWU. The union is said to be under attack from bosses for organising farm workers through their Speak out Campaign. The Speak-Out Campaign aims to bring an end to the oppression and exploitation of farm workers and farm dwellers by coming together to build solidarity, strength and hope amongst the rural working class. The Legal Centre in Defence of the Rural Poor aims to provide training and education, legal advice and services, referrals of matters to existing organisations for litigation purposes, advocacy support, and facilitation of partnerships with existing organisations, assistance with cases in alternative foray other than conventional courts and eventually litigation. 19 September - Gender - SACTWU’s Worker Health Program to roll out medical male circumcision

Nikki & Greg On Sakhisizwe today, we were joined by Nikki Soboil - Executive director of SACTWU’s Worker Health Program and trainer - Greg Hoedemaker telling us more about the roll out of medical male circumcision for its members as of next month in the province. SACTWU’s Worker Health Program funded by PEPFAR launched its own roll out of surgical Medical Male Circumcision services within Kwa Zulu Natal at the end of last year in support of the National Department of Health’s comprehensive HIV prevention package and COSATU’s HIV/Aids prevention program. Free Medical Male Circumcision services are offered to all union members and their families as well as HIV awareness and education, HIV counselling and testing, STI screening and testing and safe sex messaging. In today's show, we spoke to Ceris Field - Chairperson of the Cape Law Society’s Will and Estates Committee. This week is the National Wills Week. National Wills Week presents an opportunity for attorneys to participate in one of the profession’s main access to justice initiatives, but also to fulfill their pro bono commitments. Attorneys participating in the National Wills Week will draft basic wills free of charge but an appointment must be made with a participating attorney or firm. Action Volunteers Africa is looking for donors

We were also joined by Lisa Garson - Director of Action Volunteers Africa speaking to us about what they do. Action Volunteers Africa or AVA is a non-profit recruitment organisation established to foster a volunteering culture among young South Africans. They place school-leaving students from a wide range of schools into 6 -12 month volunteer learnerships in a variety of South African NGOs. GF Jooste Hospital Closure Coalition voices concerns

We closed off with an interview with Damaris Kiewiets - Chairperson SANGOCO and the Cape Health Forum speaking to us about the GF Jooste Hospital Closure Coalition’s concerns. Also on the line we were joined by Faiza Steyn - director of communications for the Western Cape Department of Health. The GF Jooste Hospital Closure Coalition said they fail to understand the Provincial Department of Health’s reasons for the shutdown of  GF Jooste Hospital whilst they welcome the plan to build a new hospital that will include paediatric and obstetric services, they are also deeply concerned about the potentially catastrophic impact the closure will have in the community as well as on all health facilities throughout Metro West.

17 September - Health - September marks Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month

In today's show, we heard from Win Van der Berg – Chairperson of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation in the Western Cape . We were talking about Muscular Dystrophy and the work done by the Foundation. The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa is a non-profit organisation which supports people affected by Muscular Dystrophy and Neuromuscular disorders. They support affected people and their families by offering emotional support and genetic counselling. They also support research projects undertaken in South Africa . Jill Robson - Regional director of Alzheimer’s SA in the Western Cape was Instudio   to tell us more about Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. On Friday, September 21 st is the World Alzheimer's Day. Statistics show that dementia affects one in 20 people over the age of 65 and one in 5 people over the age of 80. The theme for World Alzheimer's Day is “ Dementia: living together” and focuses on reducing the stigma associated with dementia and encouraging the creation of dementia-friendly communities. 14 September - Arts, Culture & Environment - Showtime Australia is looking for Whitney impersonator

In today's show, we heard from Johnny Van Grinsven – Producer at Showtime Australia. Showtime Australia is conducting a world-wide search for the ultimate Whitney Houston impersonator for a new tribute show called "The Greatest Love of All". Nationwide auditions will be held in South Africa in October 2012. A singer with a superb voice is being sought to take the coveted lead role as Whitney Houston. Auditions in Johannesburg take place at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein on the 3 rd of October at 13h00; in Cape Town at the Artscape Theatre on 5 th of October at 13h00 and in Durban at the Sibaya Casino on the 7 th of October at 13h00. Open Book Festival & Arts Update

We also spoke to Frankie Murrey - Open Book Festival Co-ordinator and Poet - Winslow Schalkwyk. Open Book Cape Town is an annual literary festival that was initiated last year. The core programme of the festival includes events that feature both international and local authors. They organise events in selected schools and have started long term projects inspired by their vision. Winslow will be perfoming at the Open Book Festival poetry event "The Distance Between Page and Stage" on the 21 st of September at the Truth and Coffee shop, Buitenkant Street in Cape Town from 18PM. The festival is happening from the 20 th – 24 th of September 2012. Labour and Public Enterprise Committee visits Sheltered Employment Factories

We also heard from Priscilla Themba – Chairperson of the Select Committee on Labour and Public Enterprise. She was speaking to us about the outcome of the Committee's unannounced oversight visit to Sheltered Employment Factories in the Western Cape yesterday. This followed after the Eastern Cape visit at the beginning of the year. The Committee discovered that conditions in the Eastern Cape were unsatisfactory, so they decided to visit other factories in the Western Cape in order to compare the two provinces.

12 September - Gender - iThemba Walkathon registrations open

In today's show, we spoke to Vicky Saunders - PRO internal communications and corporate affairs manager for Avon Justine. She was speaking to us about their iThemba Walkathon that’s open for registration.
