30 April - Health - Tomorrow is World Asthma Day

In today's show, we spoke to Professor Eric Bateman - Chairperson of the International Board of the Global Initiative for Asthma. Tomorrow is World Asthma Day and the theme this year is “You can control your asthma”. World Asthma Day is a global, annual awareness-raising event organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma and supported and endorsed in South Africa by the National Asthma Education Programme. The theme was chosen to emphasize that effective asthma treatments exist and, with proper diagnosis, education, and treatment, the great majority of asthma patients can achieve and maintain good control of their disease. When asthma is under control, patients can live full and active lives and can prevent emergency visits to the hospital. We also heard from Sasha Hendler – from the Independant Midwife Practitioners Association in Cape Town . On Saturday May 5 th , we are commemorating International Day of the Midwife which provides an annual focal point for midwives, midwifery associations and partners around the world. It helps raise awareness of midwifery and extend the influence of midwives in order to lobby and advocate for policy changes relating to maternal, newborn and reproductive healthcare nationally and internationally. This year’s theme builds on the achievements of the Road to Durban campaign in 2011 to engage stakeholders and provide a powerful platform to campaign globally for commitments to investing in midwifery education, employment and deployment. We closed off with an interview with Pat Gelderblom - Volunteer Service Manager at St Lukes Hospice . Next week from May 6th till 13th is Hospice week and the need for hospice care for the terminally ill in South Africa is huge, and ever-increasing mostly due to HIV and cancer. Hospice is a movement represented across the globe that believes that every person with a life threatening condition has the right to quality of life and dignity in death. 27 April - Arts, Culture & Environment - Artscape presents Amaza

In today's show we spoke to Thoko Ntshinga - Director of AMAZA, a grade 12 isiXhosa set-work play. Amaza forms part of the Artscape educational youth development programme that aims to promote social cohesion, good citizenship and empowerment through the arts. Theatre for Change to host Contemporary theatre festival

We were also joined by Mandisi Sindo and Thumeka Mzayiya - From Theatre for Change. They were here to talk about a Contemporary theatre festival they are planning at TR Section in Khayelitsha. They will be doing street theatre to address social ills faced by that community. On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Zanele Hlatshwayo - Executive director of the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa. She explained more about the organisation and the work that they do. PWMSA is a Not-for-Profit Organisation launched in 2006 to create a broad front for the development of women in South Africa that would enable women to speak with one voice, address their concerns using a single platform of action irrespective of race, class, religion, political and social standing. The work of the Movement is mostly district based, as opposed to provincial or even national as this is to encourage mass participation of women especially at grassroots level to advocate for and promote their programmes. Children's right handbook for MPs launched

We closed off with an interview with Dorothy Ramodibe of Parliament’s Portfolio and Select Committee on Women, Youth, Children and People with Disabilities. United Against Malaria initiative "invest in Malaria"

We also spoke to Lauren Gillis - Co - founder of Relate to tell us more about how the global United Against Malaria (UAM) initiative is intensifying its fundraising efforts in the run-up to World Malaria Day 2012. The theme for World Malaria Day 2012 - Sustain Gains, Save Lives: Invest in Malaria - marks a decisive juncture in the history of malaria control. In 2010 UAM joined forces with Relate, a South African not-for-profit social enterprise that creates and sells beaded cause bracelets to help raise awareness and curb the spread of malaria. Since then a signature UAM supporters’ bracelet was developed that has become a globally recognised symbol of winning the fight against malaria as close to 500 000 bracelets have been sold to raise funds for malaria education and prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. The production is said to be a ‘mythic opera’ about faith and destiny and will run at Artscape Theatre from the 2 nd till the 5 th of May.  The musical play, Flower of Shembe, is a re-imagining of what trials and tribulations might befall a prophet-in-the-making coming to terms with his own destiny. Neo who also happens to be a nephew of the Shembe clan explained more about the production. The Flower of Shembe is directed by Ina Wichterich and Craig Leo and will be at the Artscape Theatre from the 2 nd till the 5 th of May at 20H00PM. Penguin Promises Waddle for a Week campaign highlights the plight of African penguin

We were talking about the Penguin Promises Wa  ddle for a Week campaign. The campaign focuses on raising awareness about the plight of the African penguin and encourages people to promise to change something in their daily lives. The final day of the Waddle is tomorrow, 21 st April and it will see the waddlers leave from Muizenberg beach at 09:00AM and are inviting Capetonians to join them dressed in black and white. LRC and CGE fight to ensure access to maternity benefits for working women

We also spoke to Natasha Wagiet - An attorney for the Legal Resources Centre Gauteng ’s office. She was speaking to us about the follow up meeting that they had in partnership with the Commission for Gender Equality regarding Maternity Benefits. A research paper has been developed by the LRC, which highlights international agreements and Constitutional imperatives, weighing these up against current South African legislation and practice. According to LRC, South Africa is failing to give effect to Constitutional and international obligations to ensure access to maternity benefits, with harsh consequences for working women but Natasha explained more. SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation launches "Big Dreams Start Young" competition

We closed off the show with an interview with Lydia Zingoni - Director of SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation which envisions cultivating and promoting the entrepreneurial spirit in all teenagers through seminars, workshops, conferences and exhibitions. 18 April - Gender - Health4Men's Ukwazana campaign gains momentum

In today's show, we heard from Glen de Swart – Project Manager for Health4Men. We were talking about Ukwazana, a campaign of Health4Men. The campaign is a two-pronged intervention, with messaging aimed at men who have sex with men in townships in the Cape Town area. This comes in reaction to survey results indicating that up to one third of men who have sex with men may be HIV positive.   The workshop themed “Breaking through isolation” will take place on Friday April 20, 2012 between 11:00am and 12:00pm in Makhaza. HPCSA calls for more focus on early domestic violence detection incidents

We also spoke to Bertha Peters – Scheepers - Senior manager of Public Relations and Service Delivery for the Health Professions Council of South Africa. She was speaking to us about HPCSA's call for more focus on early domestic violence detection incidents. This comes following the death of one of their employee, who was shot and fatally wounded on Monday in a domestic violence incident by her policeman boyfriend at the Moot police station. According to the guidelines, emergency care professionals must now, as a professional obligation, be responsive to domestic violence by the following actions: Screening, Assess risk , Document diligently, Provide information and Refer responsibly - referring clients to appropriate resources and to identify their support system. She joined us to talk about their third Annual Open Forum that they are hosting tomorrow evening at UCT's Hiddingh Hall . This year they asking the question "Is UCT Racist?" This follows the heated debate on twitter #CapeTownIsRacist by taking the comments and applying it to the context of UCT. ISS hosting OGP seminar sessions

In today's show, we spoke to Sister Reinett Olivier - From the South African Haemophilia Foundation. We were talking about haemophilia. According to the SAHF “Haemophilia is an inherited lifelong bleeding disorder, affecting mostly males with females being carriers, causing dangerous haemorrhages internally and into the joints and muscles, resulting in severe pain and eventually causing crippled limbs.” Tomorrow is the World Haemophilia Day and the theme is  “Close the Gap”. DOH rolls out Influenza vaccination campaign

We also heard from Linda Dyasi - Programme Co-ordinator in Klipfontein and Mitchells Plain Health District. We were speaking about the department’s drive aimed at inoculating especially high risk people to reduce influenza-related morbidity and mortality and the transmission of the influenza virus within communities. The campaign runs until June 30th, 2012 and 100 000 free vaccine doses have been allocated across all districts to community health centres and clinics. People who fall under the priority group are encouraged to go to their nearest health facility to request the vaccination.

Bigshoes Foundation: SA's pioneer of Paediatric Palliative Care

We closed off with an interview with Dr Michelle Meiring - Co-founder of Bigshoes Foundation. Bigshoes Foundation provides medical care and interventions to children living in children’s homes, in families in our communities, as well as while in hospital. A Word of Art to host a Commune/Communicate/Comment exhibition & Arts Update

Catherine Howard We were also joined by Catherine Howard – Artist-in-residence with A Word of Art. Her work is spanning the gamut during this residency - photography, teaching, murals, writing, and drawings. Tomorrow A Word of Art will be exhibiting the work that was created during Catherine's project duration, as well as relevant work that Catherine and fellow artist-in-residence Victoria Potter have developed over the course of their residencies. Commune/Communicate/Comment is an exploration of community building and social awareness, engaging participants (both the students and event attendees) in a dialogue about interconnectedness, playful collaboration, and empathy. South African Women’s Football Association challenges SAFA

We closed off with an interview with Dr Teboho Maitse - Acting chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality. She was speaking to us about the recent public hearing that they convened last week Thursday regarding gender transformation in women’s football. The hearing came about after an initial complaint from the South African Women’s Football Association (SAWFA), who alleged that the South African Football Association (SAFA) was not taking the interests of women’s football into consideration, had denied them membership, and had failed to implement the solutions of the Soccer Indaba of 1997 and Football Commission of 2002, in relation to the formulation and implementation of programmes to support and uplift women’s football.

05 April - Labour - AMASA Learnership Programme deadline extended

In today’s show, we heard from Nazeem Abrahams - Committee member of Advertising Media Association of South Africa (AMASA). We were talking about the AMASA Learnership Programme (ALP) that they offering to students who want an opportunity to enter the media industry. Successful candidates will be employed and mentored by leading media owners and agencies and remunerated and enrolled on the AAA media module and AMASA Media Planning Workshop. The ALP is open to candidates with a tertiary qualification; however preference will be given to graduates who have Higher Grade Maths, BCom, Marketing, Statistics and Research qualifications. The Business Place offering Free Enterprise Development Programme

We closed off the show with an interview with Vuyo Ngaye - small business consultant for the Business Place in Philippi . The Business Place is offering Free Enterprise Development Programme in partnership with Junior Achievers South Africa. It’s a two month long free programme for out of school youth aged between 18 and 35 that commences on April 12, 2012 . 04 April - Gender - CGE hosts consultative dialogue on sex work legislative reform

On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to J anine Hicks - Lead commissioner for Gender, Democracy and Good Governance at the Commission for Gender Equality. Jenny was speaking to us about the consultative dialogue on sex work legislative reform that they hosted together with COSATU’s National Gender Committee today at their head office. The purpose of this dialogue was to inform the development of their institution's individual position on this issue, and their subsequent submissions to Parliament and supporting campaigns.  T he Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is set to table legislation in this regard before Parliament, although it is not clear when this can be anticipated. Women Against Poverty appeals for donations

We closed off with an interview with Mullah Flatwell – Co-founder of Women Against Poverty. She was telling us more about the soup kitchen that she’s been running over the past 10 years in Lavender Hill every Thursday from noon . The soup kitchen started out of the kindness of two women who wanted to make a difference in helping the less fortunate and those that go hungry every day in their own small way. She feeds mothers, babies and children from seven different schools. Aunty Mullah is an inspiration to all because she continues to do the work that she does despite receiving no funding except for a few donations. She said that it was becoming more difficult to continue as the number of mouths to feed was increasing and likewise the price of food. She is appealing for donations from members of the public. 03 April - Human Rights - SJC challenges the City's Janitorial Service

In today’s show, we spoke to Axolile Notywala - Junior Researcher for the Social Justice Coalition (SJC). He was telling us more about their formal submission to the City of Cape Town regarding a New Janitorial Service that could improve Sanitation Conditions for more than 350 000 people in Cape Town ’s Informal Settlements. They say the City's Commitment could signal major shift in Cape Town 's Sanitation Policy & Influence Sanitation Provision Nationally. Unfortunately Shehaam Sims Mayco member for Utility Services was not available to join us but have confirmed that they received the submission and will take action in due course. It outlines the need for a new service to maintain more than 13 700 permanent flush toilets in the City’s informal settlements servicing at least 350 000 residents since in many of these communities one toilet stall can be shared between a hundred households, yet they currently receive no routine maintenance from the City.
