Dr Parker, Thandeka & Maboyce
We closed off with an interview with Dr John Stanley Parker - Specialist in Psychiatry at Lentegeur Hospital in Mitchells Plain and senior lecturer for UCT’s Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health. We were also joined by Maboyce Mfuniselwa and Thandeka Ncaphayi - From Empilweni. Empilweni is a mental health center for children based in Khayelitsha. Their goal is to improve the quality of life of children, adolescents and their families within their communities by providing culturally appropriate, child centered, community based mental health support and counselling. On Wednesday is World Mental Health Day and the theme is “Depression: A Global Crisis”. According to the World Health Organisation, Depression affects more than 350 million people of all ages, in all communities, and is a significant contributor to the global burden of disease. Although there are known effective treatments for depression, access to treatment is a problem in most countries and in some countries fewer than 10% of those who need it receive such treatment.
