National Nutrition Week kicks off tomorrow

We also heard from Zukiswa Sika - A dietician from the Association for Dietetics in South Africa to tell us more about combating obesity by eating healthier. This week is the Obesity and Nutrition Week. National Nutrition Week kicks off from the 9th - 15th of October and it hopes to encourage people to use the newly developed "South Africanised" Food Guide and the recently updated Guidelines for Healthy Eating to learn more about the best choices for their healthy eating plans. A recent risk assessment conducted by the South African Medical Research Council revealed that over 50% of South African adult females and 17% of children (1–9 years) are overweight or obese. About 800 000 South Africans are living with type 2 diabetes and over 20% have high blood cholesterol levels largely due to diets that are high in saturated fats. For more information on nutrition you can contact your nearest health care centre alternatively visit www.nutritionweek.co.za or www.adsa.org.za
