Sonke Gender Justice tackles teenage pregnancy

We also spoke to Aadielah Maker - Special Programmes Advisor for Sonke Gender Justice. She was speaking to us about their efforts in addressing the rampant teenage pregnancy rate at schools. Last week Sonke Gender Justice Network with the support from SAPS, the City of Cape Town and Maitland Secondary School implemented a week long programme in the area to discuss with the community how to reduce teenage pregnancy. The week saw hundreds of Grade 9 to 12 learners attending the school having frank conversations about sex, contraception, teenage pregnancy, peer pressure, sexual exploitation and violence. It emerged from the conversations and workshops that there was a lack of knowledge regarding pregnancy, STIs and contraception amongst learners. The sessions also revealed how important it is to get boys talking about these issues since they often held back during the conversations.
