We also heard from Mduduzi
Manana – Deputy Minister of Higher
Education and Training to tell us more about the launch of “ON THE JOB ” Built Environment Training Programme which is a
partnership between the Passenger Agency of South Africa and the Department of
Higher Education and Training. The initiative offers “on the job” training to
students in the built environment sector and would form part of PRASA’s
preparations for the acquisition of the new rolling stock of trains over the
next 20 years. 40 students between the ages of 21-35 from previously
disadvantaged communities who have made it through their academic training
programs have been selected for the programme by PRASA and DHET together with
the post-school learning institutions. They will be employed for a period of
three months, during which they would receive supervision from experienced
professionals in the built environment with identified areas of training for
the first phase including B-Tech Architecture, B-Tech Construction Management,
and B-Tech Quantity Surveyor.
