August is Organ Donor Month

We closed off with an interview with Samantha Volschenk - Executive Director of Organ Donor Foundation. She was speaking to us about organ donation. The Organ Donor Foundation, through their “SAVE SEVEN LIVES DRIVE” is encouraging members of the public to become organ donors this month as one person can save 7 lives when they become an organ donor by the use of 1 heart, 2 lungs, 2 kidneys, 1 liver and 1 pancreas. The foundation is taking their awareness drive one step further by  encouraging everyone who signs up as an organ donor during August to tell “seven” more people about it either family members, colleagues or friends. They would like to reach a target of 10,000 registered organ donors this year triple the amount of registrations received last year. Remember there is no cost charged to register as an organ donor. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
