07 August - Human Rights - Hoffman threatens legal action against Metrorail

In today's show, we heard from Paul Hoffman - Director of the Institute for Accountability in Southern Africa. We were talking about his concerns regarding allegations that Metrorail is holding school children for travelling on their trains without a valid ticket. We were also joined on the line by Mthuthuzeli Swartz - Metrorail’s Regional head in the Western Cape. This emerged after it was reported in the media last week Thursday that Hoffman is threatening legal action against Metrorail if they continue to hold school children for travelling on their trains without a valid ticket but Metrorail have denied detaining children. Hoffman was reported saying that holding children was very traumatic and infringed on their rights and taking them off trains was a cruel and unusual punishment. In response Swartz denied that children were apprehended and claimed that they were only held back for as long as it took to get their details.
