02 August - Labour - Labourguide to host a workshop on the Occupational Health and Safety Act

On Sakhisizwe today, we spoke to Tinus Boshoff – Director of Labourguide. Tinus will be hosting a Health and Safety Awareness course which aims to inform individuals of their rights and responsibilities in order to secure a safe and healthy work environment for all. The course will provide an overview of the legislation, policies and practices relating to occupational health and safety, exactly what every employer and worker should know about health and safety and in addition a good awareness and better understanding of the main issues involved in health and safety. Participants will receive practical information and awareness on relevant and current health and safety matters. The course will be taking place on August 30th, 2012 at the Southern Sun at OR Tambo International Airport and on September 11th, 2012 in Cape Town at Southern Sun: Century City (Canal Walk). Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
