09 July - Health - Western Cape Health Department launches Women’s Health Season

In today's show, we spoke to Angelique Jordaan - Principal communications officer for the Western Cape Department of Health to tell us more about the province’s Women’s Health Season which kicked off last week and stretches from July to September 2012. The Western Cape Department of Health is promoting Women’s Health Season as it’s among the top five health priorities in meeting the Millennium Development Goals of the World Health Organisation. Women across the province are encouraged to make use of services designed to protect them against key health risks such as screening for the early detection of cervical and breast cancer, contraceptive choices for protection against unwanted pregnancy, HIV and other STIs, free pregnancy testing and comprehensive antenatal care. These services can be accessed at any public health clinic in the province. For more information go to your nearest clinic.

Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
