Gender NGO's call for Judge Maya's selection

We also spoke to Cherith Sanger - Policy Advocacy and Research Manager at Sonke Gender Justice Network. Sonke Gender Justice, along with UCT’s Gender, Health and Justice Research Unit, The Democratic Rights and Governance Unit and the Women's Legal Centre are calling for the selection of Judge Mandisa Maya to the Constitutional Court. These organisations claim to support Judge Maya's nomination not only because she is a candidate of exceptional merit, but also because of the critical importance of appointing more women to the judiciary and particularly to the country's highest court in terms of gender transformation and equality. According to Cherith, "fair representation of black women on the bench is essential to ensure that traditional white male spaces are transformed to more gender equitable spaces which entails that decision making power in government is shared equally amongst groups that are disproportionally disadvantaged historically".
