We were also joined by Anne Siroky – Cancer Survivor. Yesterday was International Cancer Survivors Day which provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer to connect with each other, celebrate milestones and recognize the healthcare providers, family and friends who have supported them along the way. According to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation "A 'survivor' is anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life," Anne explained more about her journey of beating the big C. International Cancer Survivors Day is in honour of all cancer survivors and this year CANSA celebrated Hope and life with survivors and their families with a special day of Hope. In addition Kobus Smit, Obie Woolward and Kedibone Bonoko are South African’s three representatives that will be participating in this year’s International Relay for Life (RFL) Heroes of Hope as they will be spreading the message of hope and courage to cancer survivors worldwide serving as a beacon of hope to all cancer patients and survivors in our country. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
