Unemployment on the rise in SA

We also spoke to Michael Bagraims - Labour Law Specialist from Bagraims Attorneys. We were talking about the latest unemployment figures. Statistics indicate an increase in the official South African unemployment figure to 25.3% in the first quarter of 2012 from 23.9% in the fourth quarter 2011 and 25.0% in the first quarter of 2011. Broad unemployment (i.e. unemployed individuals plus discouraged work seekers) provide some context to the true scale of the problem in South Africa. The figure currently stands at 6.8 million compared to the 9.5 million workers in formal non-agricultural employment. Broad unemployment has grown on an annual basis for each quarter since 2008.
