Selfhelp Manenberg’s Youth Programme grows

We closed off with an interview with Abraham Lottering - Project Manager at Selfhelp Manenberg to tell us more about their mentorship programme. Part of Selfhelp Manenberg’s Youth Programme is a mentorship or support group for learners at risk of dropping out of school. Mentors work with disruptive learners who have been identified by educators as prospective drop outs because they can’t read and write. They include mostly grade boys between the ages of 14 to 17 years old. The programme commenced in October 2010 and has assisted over a 100 learners to date as a lack of parental support and gangsterism were found to be the two main reasons for the high drop out rate in the area. Mentors and learners embark on a three day intake hike which is aimed at gaining the learners trust and getting them to open up. Following this learners are then assisted differently according to their needs which vary as some are referred to development schools whereby they learn a trade for their hands. Those with cognitive ability are taught to read and write from scratch like a grade R learner.
