31 May - Labour - ENS provides free legal education sessions

In today's show we spoke to Sharon Brink - Pro bono co-coordinator of Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs (ENS) Mitchells Plain pro bono office. She was talking to us about the legal education sessions that they host. ENS provides free legal education sessions for their pro bono clients since they were the first law firm in South Africa to establish a pro bono office in the heart of a historically disadvantaged community – Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town and now also in Alexandra, Johannesburg. Their most recent sessions were on How do you start a business? which gave those attending the basic tools on that and Public Procurement or Tenders that informed attendees where to look for government tenders, advice, and pitfalls on completing and submitting tenders, BEE points in tenders, tenders for construction contracts, your rights if the tender award seems unfair and what not to do when bidding for a tender. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
