14 May - Health - May 17th marks World Hypertension Day

In today's show we spoke to Professor Brian Rayner - Head of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the Groote Schuur Hospital and University of Cape Town. We were talking about hypertension and the importance of commemorating World Hypertension Day. Thursday May 17th marks World Hypertension Day or High Blood Pressure. This year’s theme is Healthy Lifestyle – Healthy Blood Pressure. Known as the “silent killer” because there are rarely noticeable symptoms, hypertension affects about six million South Africans, about one in four people according to reports. World Hypertension Day is aimed at highlighting the preventable stroke, heart and kidney diseases caused by high blood pressure and to communicate to the public information on prevention, detection and treatment.
