The program is for previously disadvantaged accounting graduates or those close to graduating and aims to deliver work-ready graduates into accounting practices. They also run another program called Virtual Banking Work-Readiness Program which aims to deliver work-ready graduates into the banking sector in Cape Town. Requirements for the Accounting program, is a 3 year B com degree or a Diploma and major subjects can be: Accounting, Financial Management, Internal Auditing, Financial Information Systems, Taxation, and Financial Accounting. In today’s show, we spoke to Karen Borochowitz – Executive Director of Dementia South Africa. We ere talking about the Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. On Wednesday is the World Alzheimer's Day. Statistics show that dementia affects one in 20 people over the age of 65 and one in 5 people over the age of 80. This means that 20% of people over the age of 80 develop dementia which by implication means that 80% do not. There are however diagnosed and documented cases of early–onset dementia before the age of 65. The theme for World Alzheimer's Day is 'Faces of dementia' as part of the continued education that is required Dementia SA will be holding a conference in October here in Cape Town. And we also spoke to internationally acclaimed parasitologist – Professor Heinz Mehlhorn. Professor Mehlhorn is in South Africa to discuss the prevention and treatment of lice as well as the latest research on lice and lice infestations. It is reported that contrary to popular belief, contracting lice is not related to poor hygiene – in fact, head lice are thought to prefer clean hair to dirty hair. However, good hygiene can combat body lice. Professor Mehlhorn explained more.

Our last interview was with Professor Dr Theo Kopenhager - Specialist Obstetrician & Gynaecologist. We were discussing Birth Control. Next week Monday is World Contraception Day. World Contraception Day is a worldwide campaign with a vision for a world where every pregnancy is wanted. Its mission is to improve awareness of contraception to enable young people to make informed decisions on sexual and reproductive health. The focus of this year’s campaign is to encourage teenagers to talk to people they trust, so they have all the information they need to avoid an unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections. In today’s show, we spoke to Delia Scott – Volunteer at the South African Council for English Education. SACEE aims to maintain, promote and encourage education through the English medium and to improve the standards of written and spoken English in South Africa. SACEE has started a reading project for children in Grades 3 and 6 in a few of the schools in disadvantaged areas and they are looking for volunteers to read to the children. This week is the Kidney Awareness Week and the campaign aimed at raising awareness about kidneys and, more importantly, ways to reduce the risk of kidney disease. According to medical experts, kidney disease is often ‘silent’, having few symptoms especially in the early stages. If left unchecked, the disease can progress or lead to kidney failure. If detected early, appropriate treatment can help delay or even prevent end-stage kidney failure. Sister Samai explained more. Remember to have your kidneys checked regularly, especially if you are at ‘high risk’. In today’s show, we spoke to Councillor Tandeka Gqada - Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services. The City of Cape Town is partnering with the Western Cape Bonsai Fraternity to host a bonsai exhibition at the Company's Garden, as part of its Arbor Month celebrations tomorrow from 10AM. The exhibition seeks to raise awareness about the importance of trees and to grow the general interest in bonsai as an art form, with a focus on big bonsai trees. There will be a guided walkabout at approximately 10:50, followed by workshops and demonstrations. Vendors will ensure that anyone who would like to grow their own bonsai trees can purchase the necessary materials. Residents who already have bonsais are invited to bring them along to gain expert advice and opinions on styling and cultivation.
