On today’s show, we heard from Shirley Gunn - Director of the Human Rights Media Centre. The Human Right Media Centre is a project that aims to promote an awareness of human rights by allowing organisations and members of different communities to tell their life stories to the public through a variety of media forms and through a number of projects. We were also joined on the line by Kathy Scott – from the National Association for Child Care Workers. It is a non-profit organisation that works to help promote the best standard of care for orphaned, vulnerable and at-risk children and youth. And our last interview was with Ratula Beukman – Black Sash. We were talking about Social grants. Black Sash is a non-governmental organisation that works towards advancing equality and social justice. They are urging 14-year-olds who are in need of financial assistance to apply for grants. It will take about thirty working days for your application to be processed and checked and either approved or refused. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
