Today we were joined Instudio by Clive van Zyl – Manager of the Monte Rosa home for the aged. This centre is owned by Badisa, which acts as an umbrella for numerous other organisations that assist people in various ways. We briefly spoke about Badisa’s function as a whole, and focused on Monte Rosa, specifically with regards to elder abuse. Lenin Nzulu Gona – from the Social Justice Coalition were also here today. The Social Justice Coalition is an independent group that believes in freedom, equality, non-violence and human rights, and was launched in June 25th. One of their aims is to actively use the South African Constitution to ensure that private and governmental policies and conduct are always based on consideration of the needs of poor and marginalised people. And our last interview was with Anthea Van Der Berg - from the Centre for Rural Legal Studies. Based in Stellenbosch, The Centre for Rural Legal Studies is a non-profit organisation that promotes a sustainable rural culture where resources are equally distributed. Anthea works in the Law Clinic and provides farm workers with legal advice and support services on labour issues. We spoke about the Centre as well as the role of the Law Clinic. Winter having an effect on Bloodstocks

The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to all donors to donate blood as blood stocks are critically low. “The winter is having a severe effect on our bloodstocks and we are amidst a severe blood stock shortage”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. There is a critical shortage in the O and B blood groups, with only a 2-day supply left. The A-positive blood stocks are also under severe pressure as only a 3-day supply is left. WCBS always aim to have a blood stock level of 5 days. The winter weather is not conducive to going out, and with the continuing storms in Cape Town, they are seeing the effects on their blood stocks. Blood donors suffer from colds and flu during this time and can subsequently not donate blood – up until the resolution of their symptoms .
